2 out of 5:
Good Overall Information Source
by lzeitlin, Mar 17 '04
It is important to say
that newsweek magazine has an overall good balance of world and
national news. If you want to obtain a magazine that
will give you a basic understanding of different world
developments, and I repeat "basic understanding" this is
a safe bet. Nonetheless, most of the articles found in
newsweek will not give the reader an in depth analysis
of the topic at hand and in most cases will be very
superficial. For example, in newsweek articles dealing
with poverty conditions in Somalia and Rwanda, the
magazine fails to mention how the United Nations and the
United States have failed to successfully address the
problem. In articles about genocide in East Timor, the
magazine fails to tell you that the weapons that were
used by the Indonesian army to commit genocide were
provided by the United States and that the United States
used its veto power at the security council to prevent
sanctions on Indonesia. In other topics such as the
economic crisis in Argentina, the magazine fails to tell
the reader about some of main factors leading to the
crisis such as the incredible corruption of Argentina's
previous government. To conclude, get this magazine if
you want a basic source of global information. If you
want a magazine that will give you real insight on world
affairs, do not buy newsweek magazine.

5: HAS AN OBVIOUS LIBERAL SLANT
by dbirchall, Mar 15 '04
newsweek has an obvious liberal slant. It seemed like 9
times out of 10, the articles written about politics had
a left-wing bias. So if you're in to "journalism" with a
liberal agenda, this would be for you. My subscription
just ran out and I will not be renewing it. |

of 5: Good "lite" news mag, slightly biased
by mattyork28, Mar 07 '04
I have read newsweek for eleven
years and enjoy it still. The political coverage seems
to be less even-handed in recent years, and some
articles are increasingly using biased language, which
has been disappointing (it has an anti-conservative
bias). The entertainment and general culture reporting
is good, and it is much better than any TV. news out
there. It shouldn't be one's only news source, but it is
worth reading.

Name change needed
by tj696, Feb 29 '04
After reading newsweek magazine for
20-plus years, I've given it a new name: WarWeek. Don't
get me wrong--I love politics and the superficiality of
newsmagazines and all that but...they're the poster boy
for war coverage/terrorism coverage/and general Hawkish
paranoia without fail week after week. I used to think
they were the more liberal/objective of the
newsweeklies. Now I think Time is the better read.

2 out of 5: More of Hype
than substance
by andixiemom, Feb 17 '04
I switched from Time to newsweek magazine; it is pretty
general and does not really give you core
Political/General News. If you are looking to brush up
your general/political awareness, I recommend Time is
much better.
